Penang – food haven

The first day, as usual, after reaching Penang island, we went to Delima Selera at Island Glades for its ‘char kuey tiao’. Not bad. But not as good as I remembered. We also tried its asam laksa, which was surprisingly very nice. The ‘chee chiong fun’ was also not bad. Penang style chee cheong fun has lots of prawn paste (hae goh), making it an instant hit with me. Hehe.. but its not very healthy, so don’t eat that so much.

We checked in and rested a while before picking up my granma and setting off to visit my aunt in town. We ate near her house at a food court called Cameron. I liked the char quey tiao there. Nice! We also tried otak otak, chun piah (which is fried popiah).
Our hotel

Later at night, we went to our all-time favourite – Song River, for supper. As you can see, I’ve been eating all day long. To go to Song River, just walk from Gurney Hotel to Evergreen Laurel to the food shops ahead. Since we were staying at Evergreen Laurel, we walked there every night. We have been doing that for the past two years. Haha.. The first night, we ate its fried oyster, and lobak.

Second day, breakfast was at Jelutung market. I really like the market, it’s more like a super big pasar malam in the morning, with lots of cheap stuff for sale including stuff like clothes, food, wallets, belts, raw food etc. I tried the emporer’s mee while my mom ate the hokkian mee aka prawn mee. According to her, it’s one of the nicest. To define hokkian mee as nice, the soup must be tasty and sweet while not being oily. I liked my emporer’s mee too, it’s nice, plus theres chicken and some fried potatoes, all that for rm2.50. After shopping for a while there, we were supposed to go to queensbay after that, we took a wrong turn and ended up on the penang bridge. Oops! So we had to go one big circle and take the ferry back to penang island.

Since we were already in town, we went to swatau foodcourt for lunch. It’s just ok. Don’t go there. After lunch, we went to gurney plaza for a quick walk before heading back to the hotel to rest. Dinner was at a foodcourt near the botanical gardens called Goodall. It was unexpectedly nice! We have never been there, but the hokkian char was very nice. Moreover, they had beef kuey tiaw soup, which is quite hard to find.

Supper was at Song River, of course. Since we were quite full, we only ate char kuey tiaw without egg each, shared its hok kian char while I and my brother ate one chicken wing each. The kuey tiaw is the best in penang, at least that’s what I think. However, the hokkian char is not very nice. Goodall has nicer ones.

Third day morning we ate at the food court beside delima selera. It’s new to us. Surprisingly, the loh mee and hokkian mee there is super nice! And very authentic too! And cheap! Rm2.30 per bowl. After that, we finally made it to queensbay, where I met Kelvin! Haha..

Lunch was a treat by my aunt. They brought us to eat nasi kandar at Kassim Mustafa, the best in town, according to them. It was really nice! We went to see my granma since it was the last day we had there. Lastly, we went to Lorong Selamat for its famous ice kacang and kuey tiaw thing. I really like the ice kacang, especially its ice cream, which tastes of vanilla peanut butter. Plus, there are lots of raisins and other ingredients.

Bloated, we had a late dinner at Song River, eating for the last time our char kuey tiaw without egg (I think without egg makes it smoother), fried chicken wings, fried oyster, and fried popiah. We even met a very cute little boy selling cakes who sounded like a ‘dua tauke’, until the mother scolded him for playing with the food.

my favourite char kuey tiaw - best ever! not really la, the best i've eaten was by some friend of my granma last time, but she has since shifted to somewhere unknown.

All in all, food that I won’t miss if ever I’m in penang is Song River’s char kuey tiaw without egg and Lorong Selamat’s ice kacang!=]

cookie craze

my batch friends have recently started a cookie baking craze. first was carolyn with her green pea cookie. simply delicious. the result inspired ee wan to bake her own chocolate cookies which was as good as famous amos.

since i only managed to get the recipe for ee wan's cookies, i came home and immediately baked a batch for my friends when we went to celebrate my 22nd birthday. so here is what i managed to produce...

recipe: (copyright of ee wan)
Chocolate chips cookies...

butter 250g, plain flour 250g, sugar 120g, almond nibs 200g - mix together

chocolate chips 150g mix with the mixture

shape into irregular shapes and place on tray.

bake at 180C (i used 140 C on my oven) for 15-20 minutes.

all the gifts. thanx so much!=]

birthday celebration at Food Diam, S2.

the trip of the year --> to melaka once again! even though this was our 2nd trip to melaka, i still enjoyed every moment.

we set out in chee kian's car, running a lil' late, or maybe shong lap's car was just early. first stop was donald&lily's nyonya food. i ordered rojak this time while getting to taste the nyonya chicken rice and laksa. of course, we could never go there without eating their nyonya cendol! ^^

at Donald's and Lily's

after eating lunch, we had to rush to the century mahkota hotel to check in. while half of them were busy checking in, we the other half amused ourselves taking photos. haha..

finally a picture with francis where i don't look weird. haha..

三朵金花 ;p

the apartment was smaller than King's but still 'boleh tahan' la. we took turns bathing, then we went to eat 'lok lok' before going to visit the portugese settlement. wow, the houses there were really pretty, all decorated with lights and christmas decorations. we even saw a santa with his troop of singing carolers. and we bought santa hats!^^ i love mine. hehe..

chilling in the hotel room before going out for lok-lok

alap's picture taking skills are just what we wanted if not better.=]

christmas cheer ^^

more christmas cheer! ;p

on our way back, we stopped by to grab some junk food before heading back to eat them all! buahaha.. we thought of various creative ways of what you can do to pass time with a deck of cards. basically, it was just '大小', mafia, in between (i didn't play that, i was busy.;p), 杀手。oh ya, before that, we stopped at dataran pahlawan for a breath of fresh air. the atmosphere there was very nice and peaceful. just the ideal place to lie back on the grass and gaze at the stars. or to have a romantic stroll.

stopping by dataran pahlawan's christmas deco before going up to the field above

this is shong lap's chance to show how creative he is posing at the same spot for changing people. haha..

the next day, we went for breakfast at the hotel, with a surprise 'discount' thanks to the blurness of the hotel workers. haha.. after checking out, the afternoon was spent in dataran pahlawan and mahkota parade (we just chillied in McDonald). we had dinner at Newton since the nyonya restorant we were supposed to go wasn't open yet. Finally, we went to jonker's street before heading back to seremban.

Graffiti can be nice too !

friends 4eva! hugzz.

Jonker's street at night

we didn't really eat a lot of melaka food or visit any historical sites, but i really enjoyed the company, which is the whole point of the trip after all. the time we spent together, there really is no words to describe the feeling we got. the funniest moments were i think when lin hui did her sexy butt twisting move so unexpectedly and naturally. she really got talent man. haha.. and also shong lap's creative alarm clock which goes like this: tit.. tit tit tit.. tit tit tit tit.. tit tit tit tit tit... increasingly louder. not forgetting the way chee kian always gets J or K when trying to increase his numbers during 大小。 thanx guys, for making this lovely trip possible with your presence and 'sakai'ness. =]

friends are the people you turn to for advice,

the people you know you can lean on in turbulent times;

the people who teach you how to laugh, at each other or at times, at yourself.

a fragile line linking all of us

a trust, a relationship,

slowly built over years of time shared together,

reinforced by tears shed together,

and laughter leading on to stitching sides,

or even silly antics done to pass time,

headed by our three jokers: francis, shong lap and suat yee.

to become what we are now.

a family.

hope our circle of friendship goes on and on.

without an end.

even until we are so old

that we have to guess how many of our teeth have dropped out

instead of how many sticks of lok-lok we've eaten.;p

‘big girls don't cry...'
我心里难受时你们在我身边,谢谢。。=]

princess' 22nd birthday!=]

on friday after going to pc fair, me, shu yin and kelvin went to find perfume for leng leng. we even established a routine. first, shu yin will smell, then she will pass the test strips to me, and i will pass them all to kelvin, who would have his hands full of all sorts of smells. we came across some quite nice ones, like.. umm.. estee lauder's beautiful love? can't really remember the name. then ralph lauren the orange coloured one. very fruity. quite nice. ck's pink colour one also not bad. in the end, we bought ck's summer, since it was a limited edition. it smells nice too, leng leng wore it today. hehe.. so, now, that's just the present. we had much more planned for her. buahahaha..

monday. day before the big day. we went to fusion haven to eat lunch. they still had the offer where you could buy a dish for rm3.90 after odering a drink of at least rm3. i tried the vietnamese chicken rice this time. i sampled shu yin's pepperocino and pui leng's carbonara too. both were nice, but in different ways. mine was nice too! hehe.. i ordered apple tea this time round. we had a nice lunch before rushing back to listen to Dr. Ong's sexy voice for an hour and a half.

today. haha.. leng's birthday. we told her we were going to pasar malam. chris told her he was bringing her out to eat. actually.. we were there to surprise her, along with her high school friends. i could vaguely remember the way. been there once. got lost in the process. but finally managed to find our way there. it was so funny. she was like walking by (we were hiding in the side garden) saying 'hi uncle' to some uncle, then she saw us and was just simply stunned. touched too i think. haha.. feel very happy for her too.
